she invited me into her 10 on 10 group at the exact right moment. i’ve been feeling a little stumped lately. needing a deadline to sort of force myself to face the things i hem and haw endlessly about that i never have time for. creative things. i took this photo of my big guy last friday. i looked at his smooth beautiful skin, his golden hair and steel blue eyes. and i just felt like, i have to take your picture. you are so beautiful to me. so i set out this weekend to focus on working on technique type things i’ve been wanting to have time for and to focus on photographing my family, out of the house, together. so here it is. my first 10 on 10. at the end be sure to follow the link to the next photographer!! about two years ago, give or take, i offered free family portrait sessions to build up my portfolio. to think of looking back to those pictures sort of makes me want to throw up. but that’s another story. this lovely little family of four, with a new 8 week old baby, asked me over. i can remember the day clearly. driving to the familiar neighborhood where my sister had just moved away from. i was nervous and sweaty and talking to her (sister) on the phone. their house is a little tucked away, but i found it. i remember parking behind the row of bushes in front of their house. not to hide the car from the pictures, but so that i could hyperventilate without anyone seeing me. when i walked in, most of it melted away. my specialty has long been getting “in” with kids. 3 year old Lissa was beyond excited to have a visitor and her confidence in me and comfort melted away a lot of the fear. now, if i had to go back and look at those pictures, would i be happy? i’d probably cringe, might look away. probably a lot of saturation, little care for skin tones and a very basic understanding of how i should be using light. i will never forget though when i sent them to her, when she told me one of the images i had taken of 8 week old Luke had made her cry. that was a new feeling for me. to have someone feel the emotion i had been trying to capture. 100% success.

over the last two years i’ve stayed in touch with their mom and i’d go as far as to say we became friends (right Jaimie?!?!). and recently, when the planets aligned with time off and a new job change, she asked if i had any availability. and i promise you, i’m not as cheap as i was 2 years ago. i sat and stared at the email. wanting to simultaneously scream “YES!!!! I’M EMBARRASSINGLY AVAILABLE!” and also run away and hide, sure that my new price would scare her away. but here’s the thing, and it’s the most important part, it wasn’t too much. and this is what i want to stress to you. if you find a photographer you like, that you respect, a photographer whose eye makes you feel something, a photographer who you truly want to invite in, to see your family through their eyes, it’s not too much. and most photographers would rather offer a payment plan than turn you away. because picking a skilled, talented, and devoted photographer is the most important part of hiring someone for this most intimate job.

this might be the first family session i’ve ever shot where i feel like the client and i worked in perfect harmony. we wanted the same things. to see the truth in who her children are now and to document their family as they live together and happy, in their house with the purple door. and baking brownies never hurts either.

for now. i’m checking one thing off. for months, nah, years, i’ve driven past this stretch of the charles river. awesome playgrounds and gorgeous foliage. and so when jack learned, officially, how to ride his bike a few weeks back we thought this would be a great place to take him. this was also the day i decided i need a bike because turns out this mama is not made for runnin’ after a bike. this was also when new england thought it was summer.

small note * there is a photo in there of a woman, and it looks like a bunch of people huddled, filming something. we were asked to step in after she saw me shoot this. the big kid was too shy so, the husband, the small boy and i were interviewed by a fire safety puppet. our 15 minutes of fame is dropping in elementary school VCRs. fire safety video. good stuff.

a week ago today, it was a brisk spring morning. the sun was waking as slowly as i was. the boys were up early, still not sleeping great in their bunk beds. husband was off on a job, being an electrician. his third favorite thing to be next to dad and hub. it was my first morning on my own with the boys in at least 8 months, give or take a few trips away here or there. and it was vacation. despite all this, like a boss, i got the boys to walden pond before 9:30am. without towels and with too little food, but these are minor details. there were maybe 5 other families on the beach, for about an hour after we got there. the sun still hadn’t fully risen and the shade had a bite to it. trembling little skinny bodies, covered in goosebumps, being lathered with cold, creamy sunscreen. an absurdly familiar moment. these kids aren’t friends, they’re family. and there was something i fell in love with. their skinny little bodies, huddled close. running screaming from the icy water. yet completely unable to stay away from it. and the babies, who met three years ago in a starbucks, tucked into slings and bucket seats. brave little people in a big wide world.

anyway. we baked in the sun for almost 6 hours. when we got home we were hot, and sweaty, and stunk like sunscreen. it was beautiful and wonderful and SUMMER HURRY UP. but for now. i’ll take the rainy day to reflect. a week ago today.

camera geeks? shot in full sun, wide open, because that’s how i like it (ha ha…er…) and edited with VSCO which is my new boyfriend.
